The Doubt

Since 2011, Qatar poured over a billion euros into Paris Saint-Germain. Neymar, Messi, Mbappé. The most expensive names in football history, all under one roof. And every spring brought the same heartbreak. 2017: leading 4-0, overturned 6-1 at Camp Nou. La Remontada. 2020: the final, lost to Bayern Munich on a goal by Kingsley Coman, a kid from their own academy. 2022: cruising 2-0 on aggregate, Benzema scores a hat trick in 17 minutes. 2024: 44 shots across two legs against Dortmund, zero goals. The dressing room had become a collection of talents, not a team.

I didn't feel like we were a team. Everyone was playing for themselves, we were a bit lost on the pitch. You can't afford to have one, two, or three players who don't run.

Vitinha

On the Messi-Neymar-Mbappé era, interview December 2025

Summer 2024. Kylian Mbappé leaves. The club's all-time top scorer chooses Real Madrid. The experts are unanimous: PSG have downgraded. But Luis Enrique sees an opportunity. 'None of you are special,' he tells his players. 'Our game does not consist in letting one player do what he wants.' The philosophy is radical: total pressing, multi-functional players, the collective above all.

The moment he leaves, the team becomes the cornerstone. Having one player who can do whatever he wants on the pitch means there are situations I cannot control. Next season, I will control all of them. Without exception.

Also in January, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia arrives from Napoli and the attacking trident finds its definitive shape. Luis Enrique repositions Dembélé as a central forward. The transformation is spectacular.

Doué, 19 years old: two goals and one assist. Three direct goal contributions in a Champions League final, never seen before. Player of the Match. Champions League Young Player of the Season, ahead of Lamine Yamal. Kvaratskhelia, who arrived just five months earlier from Napoli, drives home the fourth. And Senny Mayulu, a Parisian academy graduate, comes on in the 84th minute and scores 120 seconds later. The largest margin of victory in Champions League final history.

And Marquinhos. Twelve years. He arrived at 19, when the Qatari project was barely off the ground. He lived through La Remontada. He wept after the 2020 final. He endured Benzema's hat trick. He watched the superstars come and go, one by one. Tonight, he is crying before the final whistle even blows. When he lifts the trophy, it is not just for him. It is for everyone who passed through this club without ever touching it.

4-0. Humiliation. The collective against the individuals. Mbappé powerless against the system that replaced him.

The Final

In the final, exhaustion catches up with PSG. The draw had been ruthless: Inter Miami, Bayern Munich while down to nine, Real Madrid. On the other side of the bracket, Chelsea had a far less demanding run. Without Pacho, physically drained after three legendary matches, PSG cannot compete.

Club World Cup - Final

Chelsea 3-0 Paris Saint-Germain
The only trophy to escape this legendary team. The bitterness is there, but so is the pride. Beating Messi, Mbappé and Bayern while down to nine in the same tournament: nobody had done it. Nobody will do it again.

"The architect"

His tactical choices were called incomprehensible. His squad management, madness. When he repositioned Dembélé as a central forward, observers rolled their eyes. When he threw youth players into decisive matches, they called it reckless. Luis Enrique never wavered. Total pressing, multi-functional players, the collective above all. After the Super Cup win in Udine, he declared: "We didn't deserve to win." The humility of a man who built a team in his image. The Sextuple as the definitive answer.

I'd rather have four players who score 12 goals each than one who scores 40.
